Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is nearly always sold as sodium salt of carboxymethylcellulose and is used in this readily soluble form. The acid form is insoluble. It has an average degree of substitution of 0.75, and a maximum viscosity of 4000 cP for 1% concentration.
