In 1996, up to a quarter of pesticides sold were chiral. Traditionally, the environmental risks of pesticides have been evaluated mainly on the basis of their specific chemical structures. Studies beginning in the 1990s demonstrated that the enantiomers of a hexachlorocyclohexane (a-HCH) tend to be selectively degraded by microorganisms and there could be deviations in distribution patterns and bioaccumulation potentials between enantiomers in the environment.
