Skin cancer (abnormal growth of skin cells) is most commonly seen on skin exposed to sunlight. But this common cancer can also appear on skin that is not often exposed to sunlight. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.
Skin cancer begins in the epidermis of the skin. The epidermis is a thin layer that protects the skin cells that the body continually sheds. The epidermis contains three main types of cells:
Squamous cells located just below the outer surface act as the lining of the skin.
Basal cells, which produce new skin cells, are located below squamous cells.
The melanocytes that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its normal color, are located under the epidermis. When exposed to sunlight, melanocytes produce more melanin to help protect the deeper layers of your skin.
