Ultrafiltration is a separation process that uses membranes to filter out impurities from a solution. Submerged UF membranes are used in a process known as submerged UF, where the membrane is completely immersed in the solution being treated. This is in contrast to external ultrafiltration, where the membrane is not immersed in the solution and the solution passes through the membrane. In submerged ultrafiltration, a pressurized feed stream is passed through a membrane to separate out impurities that are too large to pass through the membrane pores. The purified product is collected on the other side of the membrane, while impurities are retained by the membrane and eventually removed during washing. Submersible ultrafiltration is commonly used in a variety of industries including water treatment, pharmaceuticals, food processing and biotechnology. It is especially suitable for the removal of particles, such as bacteria and viruses, from aqueous solutions, as well as the concentration and separation of proteins and other biomolecules.
