Stainless steel has strong corrosion resistance because the chromium or other alloy metal it contains has a great affinity with oxygen and reacts with it to form a protective layer, thereby preventing the corrosion of iron. However, this layer can be affected by certain acids, causing the iron to be attacked and oxidized by intergranular mechanisms or general pitting. Some types of stainless steel also contain other alloying elements; Mainly nickel and molybdenum.
