For natural samples with a Pb content of a few parts per million or less, the precision of Pb isotope determination is still essentially related to the rigorous control of analytical contamination. This has been recently highlighted by Thirlwall (2000). The precision of Pb isotope measurements by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is related to the determination of instrumental mass discrimination.
