Lactic acid (HLA) (2-hydroxypropanoic acid, CH3-CH(OH)-COOH) as a naturally occurring organic acid was firstly discovered in sour milk by Swedish chemist Scheele in 1780, and then obtained by fermentation in 1881, resulting in its industrial production. It is used as a synthetic intermediate in many organic synthesis industries and in various biochemical industries.
