Tubulin is a globulin that is the basic structural unit of microtubules inside cells. Tubulin specifically binds to certain antimitotic agents, such as colchicine, vincine, and podophyllosin. Once combined with colchicine, it prevents alpha - and beta-tubulin (subunits) from polymerizing into microtubule proteins, thus completely losing its function to form microtubules. Tubulin plays an essential role in maintaining cell shape, movement, and transport of materials within the cell.
