In 1997, HP introduced its first benchtop quadrupole LC/MS 1100 Series LC/MSD. The 1100 Series LC/MSD provides fast information in a single chromatographic run. It provides molecular weight structural information with the excellent selectivity needed to identify compounds, check the purity of chromatographic peaks, and quantify trace sample levels in complex matrices in a robust, reliable, easy-to-use benchtop system. The 1100 Series LC/MSD has many advantages as an LC detector. It provides the dynamic range and repeatability required for most quantitative applications. In SIM mode, it provides high sensitivity. For compounds lacking strong chromophores, it provides detection limits unattainable by other detectors. By providing unit mass resolution at m/z3000, LC/MSD allows the characterization of large proteins over 60,000 kD. Expanding the mass range to 3000 is also beneficial for studying modified proteins, such as glycoproteins, which have a charge distribution above m/z 2000.
The Agilent 1100 Series LC/MSD is a benchtop mass spectrometer designed for integration with 1100 Series HPLC systems. It is a quadrupole-based atmospheric pressure ionization (API) instrument capable of electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI). The LC/MSD can handle normal HPLC flow rates (1 mL/min) with no splitting of effluent and minimal adjustment of the spray chamber.
