Elastase (EST) is an enzyme from the group of hydrolases, specifically–endopeptidases. In its active site contains serine, so it is classified as a serine protease. EST hydrolyzes peptide bonds, which are in the vicinity of small amino acids such as glycine, alanine and serine. EST as well as chymotrypsin is well known as TPO-like proteases, which hydrolyze the proteins, including elastin.
