Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), also known as bone morphogenic protein, is a group of highly conserved functional proteins with similar structures, belonging to the TGF-β family. BMP can stimulate DNA synthesis and cell replication, thereby promoting the directional differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblasts.
BMP-5 is expressed in the nervous system, lung and liver. It is a regulator of dendritic cell growth in sympathetic neurons. BMP-5 is a 454 amino acid precursor protein that is cleaved to release the biologically active C-terminal mature protein.
