Official Full Name: cyclin dependent kinase 4
Also known as: CMM3; PSK-J3
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the serine/threonine protein kinase family. This protein is highly similar to the gene products of Streptococcus cerevisiae cdc28 and Streptococcus pombe cdc2. It is the catalytic subunit of the protein kinase complex and is important for progression into the G1 phase of the cell cycle. The activity of this kinase is restricted to the G1-S phase and is controlled by the regulatory subunit d-type cyclins and the CDK inhibitor p16 (INK4a). This kinase was shown to be involved in the phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma gene product (Rb). Mutations in this gene and its associated proteins, including D-type cyclins, p16(INK4a) and Rb, have been found to be associated with tumorigenesis in a variety of cancers. Multiple polyadenylation sites of this gene have been reported.
