Official Full Name: coagulation factor II, thrombin
Also known as: PT; THPH1; RPRGL2
This gene encodes the prothrombin protein (also known as coagulation factor II), which undergoes multiple steps of proteolytic cleavage to form the activated serine protease thrombin. Activated thrombin converts fibrinogen to fibrin during thrombus formation and plays an important role in thrombus formation and hemostasis by stimulating platelet aggregation and activating other coagulation factors. Thrombin also plays a role in cell proliferation, tissue repair, and angiogenesis, and maintains vascular integrity during development and after birth. Peptides derived from the C-terminus of this protein have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Mutations in this gene lead to various forms of thrombosis and dysthrombinemia. The rapid increase in cytokine levels following coronavirus infection can dysregulate the coagulation cascade, producing thrombus, impaired blood supply, and organ failure.
