Intermediate filaments (IFs) belong – besides microtubules and thin filaments – to the three principle cytoskeletal structures and are formed by about 60 different proteins, for example vimentin, keratin, filensin, phakinin and lamin. Point mutations in IF genes are thought to be the cause for various human diseases, including severe dystrophies, myopathies, and skin disorders.
