Official Full Name: phosducin
Also known as: PHD; MEKA; PhLP; PhLOP
This gene encodes a phosphoprotein that is located in the inner and outer segments of retinal rod cells. This protein may be involved in the regulation of visual light transduction or in the integration of photoreceptor metabolism. It regulates the phototransduction cascade by interacting with the β and γ subunits of the retinal G-protein transducin. This gene is a potential candidate gene for retinitis pigmentosa and Usher syndrome type II. Alternative splicing transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
