Official Full Name: S100 calcium binding protein A1
Also known as: S100; S100A; S100-alpha
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the S100 protein family, which contains two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. S100 proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of a variety of cells and are involved in the regulation of many cellular processes, such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. The S100 gene includes at least 13 members, which are located on chromosome 1q21. This protein may play a role in stimulating Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release, inhibiting microtubule assembly and inhibiting protein kinase C-mediated phosphorylation. Reduced expression of this protein is associated with cardiomyopathy.
