Official Full Name: xanthine dehydrogenase
Also known as: XO; XOR; XAN1
Xanthine dehydrogenase belongs to the group of molybdenum-containing hydroxylases involved in the oxidative metabolism of purines. The encoded proteins have been identified as part-time proteins based on their ability to perform mechanistically diverse functions. Xanthine dehydrogenase can be converted to xanthine oxidase by reversible sulfhydryl oxidation or irreversible proteolytic modification. Xanthine dehydrogenase deficiency causes xanthinuria, may lead to respiratory stress syndrome in adults, and may enhance influenza infection through an oxygen metabolite-dependent mechanism.
