Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are multi-functional peptides whose fundamental biological role in vivo has been proposed to be the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms, including Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Antimicrobial peptides are being increasingly recognised as potential candidates for antibacterial drugs in the face of the rapidly emerging bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics in recent years. In general, antimicrobial peptides kill bacteria by either disrupting their membrane, or by entering inside bacterial cells to interact with intracellular components.
