A glycoprotein on the HIV envelope. gp120 binds to a CD4 receptor on a host cell, such as a CD4 T lymphocyte (CD4 cell). All three gp120 elements contact the most amino terminal of the four immunoglobulin domains of CD4. Binding of the HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins to CD4 triggers conformational changes that allow the binding of gp120 to the chemokine coreceptor, ultimately leading to membrane fusion and virus entry.
