Human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone produced primarily by syncytiotrophoblastic cells of the placenta during pregnancy. The hormone stimulates the corpus luteum to produce progesterone to maintain the pregnancy. Smaller amounts of hCG are also produced in the pituitary gland, the liver, and the colon. In addition, Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is also a glycoprotein that is composed of 237 amino acids and has a molecular mass of 36.7 kDa, approximately 14.5 ahCG, and 22.2kDa βhCG.
