Plant chitinases are enzymes that hydrolyze the N-acetylglucosamine polymer chitin. Since chitin is a structural component of the cell wall of many phytopathogenic fungi, plant chitinases play a critical part against fungal pathogens. When plant cells are under pathogen stress, plant chitinases are strongly expressed. Chitinases are also found to be involved in various abiotic stress responses like wounding, osmotic pressure, cold, heavy metal stress, salt in plants. The express level of these enzymes can be dramatically induced by these abiotic stresses. Understanding of the plant chitinases will provide an insight for improving the pathogenic activity of various potential biocontrol strains and to develop novel pathogen resistant strategies for exploring their roles with regards to plant defense.
STEMart provides comprehensive analysis services to identify and investigate the function of chitinases in regulating plant environmental stress responses.
