Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a fairly common autosomal recessive disease, usually caused by a deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase. The normal catabolism of phenylalanine (Phe) in mammals requires its initial conversion to tyrosine (Tyr) in the liver.
