The cornea is the most transparent part of the eye, covering the iris, pupil and anterior chamber, and providing most of the refractive power to the eye. Combined with the refractive power of the lens, the light is accurately focused on the retina to form an image.
The cornea has very sensitive nerve endings. If something touches the cornea, the eyelids will automatically close to protect the eyes. In order to maintain transparency, the cornea does not have blood vessels and receives nutrients and oxygen from outside air, tears and aqueous humor.
