Knee Implant Testing

STEMart performs a variety of testing for knee prostheses and individual knee replacement components such as femurs, patellas, tibial trays and tibial inserts to characterize their use life and durability.

Applicable Standards

  • ASTM
  • ISO

Test Capabilities

  • Fatigue Testing
    • Tibial tray fatigue testing
    • Unicondylar tibial tray fatigue testing
    • Tibial post fatigue testing
    • Tibial insert fatigue testing
    • Mobile bearing knee tibial baseplate/bearing fatigue testing
    • Knee condyle fatigue testing
  • Contact Pressure Testing: Evaluate the pressure distribution and total contact area between the femoral component and tibial insert, and between the femoral component and the patella insert of a total knee replacement system under different flexion angles and loads.
  • Range of Motion Assessment
  • Wear Testing: Wear of total knee endoprostheses and patellofemoral joint is determined by weight loss and/or geometric measurements. Particle analysis of wear debris is available.
  • Interlocking Strength Testing
    • Investigate the strength of the interlocking mechanism of modular tibial PS and CR inserts.
    • Investigate the strength of the interlocking mechanism between the tibial baseplate and the tibial insert of PS knees towards static loads in anterior-posterior, posterior-anterior, medio-lateral and tensile loading direction.
  • Mechanical Tests of Patella Implants
    • Dislocation or lateral subluxation tests
    • Component disassociation tests
    • Fixation failure tests
    • Device fracture tests
    • Contact area and contact pressure tests
    • Articular surface wear tests
    • Porous metal coating tests
  • Dimensional and Endurance Properties of Knee Joint Replacement Implants
    • UHMWPE insert thickness
    • Articular surface roughness
    • Non-articular surface roughness
    • Geometrical testing
    • Fatigue testing
    • Wear testing
