Cartilage tissue is an avascular tissue, and allows the exchange and transport of nutrients, gases, and metabolites by continuous diffusion instead of through the vasculature. Diffusion in extracellular matrix (ECM) of normal cartilage is thus central to the physiobiological nature of chondrocytes. Cartilage tissue principally consists of ECM and a small number of chondrocytes. The abundant ECM in cartilage is secreted by these chondrocytes.
