Lectins are proteins or glycoproteins with at least one non-catalytic domain that specifically and reversibly bind mono- or oligosaccharides. Lectins are important because they have applications in science, medicine, agriculture, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology and other technologies. Some possible or ongoing applications of lectins are as pesticides, fungicides, anticancer drugs, and antiviral drugs. Lectins are used in the purification of glycoproteins, carbohydrates and glycolipids by affinity chromatography. Lectins are also useful as markers for blood grouping, so purification of lectins is important.

N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine Sepharose is used for the purification of N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine-specific lectins and carbohydrate-binding proteins/enzymes. Examples of n-acetyl-d-glucosamine-specific lectins are wheat germ agglutinin, elderberry agglutinin, Maackia amurensis lectin, etc.
