Neodymium (Nd) belongs to the lanthanide series (rare earth element), which was discovered by von Wersebach in 1885. Neodymium is a silver-white metal that is more reactive. Neodymium oxidizes slowly in air at room temperature, can react with water and acid to release hydrogen, and is paramagnetic. It is used in the manufacture of special alloys, electronic instruments and optical glass, and has important applications in the manufacture of laser equipment.
Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is the state-of-the-art technique to measure isotope ratios at the ppm precision level.
