Open field test (OFT), also called open box test, is a commonly used animal behavior experiment. OFT can detect the loco-motor activity and exploratory behavior of rats or mice, and is a method to evaluate the autonomous behavior, exploratory behavior and tension of experimental animals in novel environments. For example, animals are afraid of the new open environment, so they mainly move around in the peripheral area, and less in the central area, but the exploration characteristics of animals make them have the motivation to move in the central area. The frequency and duration of certain behaviors of experimental animals in novel environments are used to reflect the autonomous behavior and exploratory behavior of experimental animals in unfamiliar environments, and the tension is reflected by the frequency of urination and defecation.
The related disease research fields involved in the open field include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, schizophrenia, anxiety/depression, Huntington's disease, etc.
