Peel Testing

Peel Testing is performed between two substrates bonded together with an adhesive. Peel Testing is designed to determine the adhesive strength of the material or the strength of the adhesive bond between two materials.

STEMart performs a variety of peel testing to determine whether the adhesive bond is suitable for the intended use and if a different adhesive or bonding process is required.

Applicable Standards
  • ASTM
  • ISO
Peel Testing Types
  • T-Peel Testing: Determine the relative peel resistance of adhesive bonds between thin flexible adherends using a T-type specimen. This test evaluates the environmental durability of adhesively bonded systems and is particularly ideal for testing thin aluminum alloys.
  • 90 Degree Peel Testing: Determine the adhesive strength between a flexible (tape) and rigid substrate (plate) with a 90-degree peel test fixture. The plate lies horizontally with the gripped end of the tape sticking up perpendicular while the rest is bonded to the plate so that it forms an "L" shape. A constant 90° angle is maintained whilst the two glued components are peeled apart.
  • 180 Degree Peel Testing: Determine the adhesive strength between a flexible (tape) and rigid substrate (plate). A constant 180° angle is maintained whilst the two glued components are peeled apart.
  • Floating Roller Peel Testing: Measure the average peel strength of an adhesive and its bonding agent with floating roller fixture. Pull a flexible substrate apart gently from the rigid substance over a one-inch axle.
  • Climbing Drum Peel Testing: Determine the peel resistance of adhesive bonds between flexible and rigid adherends, or between flexible facing of a sandwich structure and its core using a climbing drum peel fixture. The climbing drum peel fixture only apply "peeling" forces to the flexible adherend/rigid adherend interface.
