Plant Calcium Elements Determination

Calcium is an essential plant nutrient which is crucial for cell wall rigidity and cell membrane stabilization. It also acts as a counter‐cation for inorganic and organic anions in the vacuole, and as an intracellular messenger in the cytosol. Calcium is taken up by roots system from the soil solution and translocated to the shoot via the xylem. The concentration of cytosolic Ca2+ will be influenced by many developmental cues and exposure to abiotic, biotic and hormonal stresses. For example, environmental challenges including heat shock, oxidative stress, drought stress, hypo-osmotic stress, pathogens infection, UV-B lead to transient, constant, or oscillatory increase of cytosolic Ca2+ concentration, and development processes such as cell division, root cell elongation, seed germination, apoptosis, senescence and stomatal closure also result in increase of cytosolic Ca2+ concentration. However, high cytosolic Ca2+ concentration is cytotoxic. When the concentration of Ca in the rhizosphere solution is excessive, the germination of seeds will be inhibited and growth rate of plant will be reduced. Therefore, the determination and analysis of calcium are essential.
