Lamotrigine, a phenyltriazine anticonvulsant, is a newer antiepileptic drug, introduced for treatment of seizure disorders in the early 90s. It exerts its antiseizure activity by blocking voltage-activated sodium channels, thereby preventing the presynaptic release of the excitatory neurotransmitters. Lamotrigine is used clinically as monotherapy or in combination with other anticonvulsants.
