Taxa Discovery and Isolation

Rapid development of metagenomic technology promotes the identification of new bacteria and archaea species. While, the hitherto isolated and cultured species are estimated to be less than 40 % of human gut microbiota and no more than 1 % of environmental microbiota. Microfluidic provides a high-throughput manner to discover and isolate previously uncultivated new taxa. Microfluidic devices allow manipulation of a single cell, which eliminates the competition between species and increases the possibility of isolation of fastidious or ultra-low-abundance species.

What We Can Do for You

  • Cultivation and isolation of non-targeted microbes
  • Isolation of targeted microbes with microfluidic device integrated with different detection techniques
    • Microscopic imaging for targeted isolation
Isolate targeted microbes by observing the morphology of microbes in droplets via microscopic imaging.
    • Fluorescence detection for targeted isolation
Isolate targeted microbes by detecting their overall metabolic activity or specific metabolites via fluorescence intensity detection.
    • Turbidity detection for targeted isolation
Detect the growth of targeted microbes in droplets by measuring the light absorbance and scattering via a photoelectric sensor. The growth of microbes in droplets increases the cell density, which leads to an increase of light absorbance and scattering.
    • Genetic assay for targeted isolation
Identify the existence of the interested taxa by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.
