β-HCG is a glycoprotein presumed to be produced by placental syncytiotrophoblastic cells and composed of alpha and beta subunits. The value of β-hCG kinetics lies in the distinction between normal and abnormal pregnancies, including ectopic pregnancies. In ectopic pregnancy, inadequate decidua of the fallopian tube leads to delayed growth and development of trophoblast tissue and delayed production of beta hCG. In addition, elevated beta-hCG indicates the presence of syncytiotrophoblast cells, as seen in choriocarcinoma, seminoma or asexual tumor, and occasionally embryonic carcinoma.
