Interleukin 24(IL-24), a cytokine that belongs to the IL-10 cytokine family, uses two heterodimer receptors called IL-20R1/IL-20R2 and IL-22R1/IL-20R2 for signaling. IL-24 may control cell survival and proliferation by inducing rapid activation of specific transcription factors Stat-1 and Stat-3. Mouse IL24 expresses a protein of about 35kD and is converted to a protein of 23kD by deglycation. IL24 proteins share 24-33% homology with other members of the IL10 cytokine family, with the highest homology with IL20.
This cytokine is released by activated monocytes, macrophages, and helper T cells (Th2) and is used in non-hematopoietic tissues such as skin, lung, and reproductive tissues. IL-24 plays an important role in wound healing, psoriasis and cancer treatment.
