Induction hardening is a process used for the surface hardening of steel and other alloy components. The parts to be heat treated are placed inside a copper coil and then heated above their transformation temperature by applying an alternating current to the coil. The quenched metal undergoes a martensitic transformation, increasing the hardness and brittleness of the part. Induction hardening is used to selectively harden areas of a part or assembly without affecting the properties of the part as a whole.
The principle of induction hardening is mainly based on electromagnetic induction. When an alternating current is passed through a coil, an alternating magnetic field will be generated around it according to the principle of electromagnetic induction. If a metal part is placed in this magnetic field, an induced electromotive force will be generated inside the part, and an eddy current will be generated. This eddy current is the direct cause of the heating of the metal itself.
