HERV-W is a multilocus family of human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) that have been found to play important roles in human physiology and pathology. Two particular members of the HERV-W family are of particular interest: ERVWE1 (encodes syncytin-1, a glycoprotein essential in placenta formation) and MSRV (multiple sclerosis-associated retrovirus , thought to play an important role in human pathology due to its increased expression in brain tissue and blood cells of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The high similarity between ERVWE1 and MSRV mRNA necessitates the need for a method that can specifically quantify MSRV expression in clinical samples.
