Relative Electrical Conductivity Detection in Plant Tissues

The permeability for electrolytes of cell membrane determines the stability of tissues, cells and cell organelles and characterizes the static genetically determined potential resistance of the genotype. So, the change in membrane permeability is one of the criteria for plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors, such as low, high temperatures, drought, and pathogen infection. The higher the plant resistance, the less the output of electrolytes from tissues into the environment decreases. In addition, external environmental factors such as cold and acute thermal stress can affect the physical properties of plant cell membranes, leading to the loss of the membrane selective permeability. So that the leakage of electrolyte from the cells into the surrounding medium will increase. The extravasation of electrolyte can be assessed by measuring the changes in relative electrical conductivity of the solution submerging the plant tissues. Therefore, the detection of the relative electrical conductivity of plants can be not only used for evaluation of plant resistance, but also facilitates the study of the impact of the environment on plant cells.

STEMart is able to detect and analyze the relative electrical conductivity of plant tissue with the gas pumping method, soaking method, and auxiliary conductivity meter.
