Skin-on-a-Chip

Skin-on-a-chip is a sophisticated and innovative microfluidic platform that consists of multiple layers that replicate the different layers of the skin, including the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat layer. Each layer is made up of specialized cells, such as keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and melanocytes, which are cultured on a porous scaffold that mimics the extracellular matrix present in natural skin. These cells are connected via a microfluidic system that allows for the flow of nutrients, growth factors, and other important molecules to simulate the dynamic environment of living tissue.

What We Can Do for You

Skin-on-a-chip offers several advantages over traditional skin models, such as improved physiological relevance, higher throughput, and the ability to easily manipulate and control experimental conditions. STEMart is able to utilize skin-on-a-chip to to faithfully replicate the complex structure and function of human skin and provide the following services:

  • Drug development and testing: Test the efficacy and potential side effects of new drug compounds, providing a more accurate representation of how drugs will interact with human skin cells.
  • Toxicity testing: Test the toxicity of chemicals and cosmetic ingredients, determining their potential harm to human skin cells without the need for animal testing.
  • Disease modeling: Represent specific skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, or melanoma and study how these diseases develop and progress, as well as test potential treatments and therapies in a controlled environment.
  • Personalized medicine: Create unique models using a patient's own skin cells for development of tailored treatment approaches and prediction of individual responses to certain medications.
  • Cosmetics testing: Evaluate the effects of cosmetic products, such as creams, lotions, and makeup on human skin cells, including their absorption, irritation, and overall impact on skin health.
