The system has three basic parts: darkroom, camera, and software. The darkroom has 5 filters that allow observation of fluorescence (ethylene bromide, SYBR green, SYBR gold) and visible stains (Coomassie, silver), in addition to allowing the user to observe chemiluminescence reactions. The camera system (there are several options) is manually controlled, and the aperture, zoom and focus can be controlled. The real advantage of the UVP system over traditional visualization systems is the LabWorks software program that runs the system. Even novice users can quickly learn the steps required to document Western blot or ethidium bromide-stained agarose gels. Western blot densitometry and 2D gel analysis using LabWorks is also more efficient and easier than traditional methods.
