Interleukin 34 (IL-34) is a protein that is part of a group of cytokines known as interleukins. It was originally discovered in humans, and orthologs of interleukin-34 in chimpanzee, mouse, rat, and chicken were also discovered through large-scale screens of secreted proteins. The protein consists of 241 amino acids, has a mass of 39 kilodaltons, and forms homodimers. IL-34 increases the growth or survival of immune cells called monocytes, which it activates by binding to the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor.
