Official Full Name: period circadian regulator 3
Also known as: GIG13; FASPS3
The gene, a member of the period gene family, is expressed in a circadian pattern in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the major circadian pacemaker of the mammalian brain. Genes in this family encode circadian components of locomotor activity, metabolism, and behavior. The gene is upregulated by the CLOCK/ARNTL heterodimer, but then interacts with CLOCK/ARNTL through the PER/CRY heterodimer, inhibiting this upregulation in a feedback loop. Polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with sleep disorders. Multiple transcript variants of this gene have been found encoding different isoforms.
