The determination of trace heavy elements in biological media by spark source mass spectrometry is studied. Direct analysis of serum, homogeneous liver and urine without prior ashing. Through reasonable control of spark parameters, the spark performance can be effectively improved. Organic interference can be kept in the lower mass range, thus leaving the higher range unaffected by such interfering ions. The elements studied are Pt, Au, Hg, Ti, Pb and Bi. Calibrate curves by using an internal image developer and elements. Concentrations below 1ppm have been measured from a single exposure. The unique sampling procedure and its feasibility as a routine pathological tool are discussed.
