Spark source mass spectrometry provides unique capabilities in trace elemental analyses which have been useful in the examination of materials of forensic interest. Response of this technique to all inorganic elements, sensitivities to the ppb range, and qualitative-quantitative data display allow acquisition of trace element "profiles" for comparison and identification purposes. Sample preparation and pretreatment is quite important. Instrumental parameters must also be carefully controlled, including spark conditions, electrode position, and ion flux. Materials studied in our laboratories include metallurgicals, synthetic fibers, and graphites as well as human hair, blood, nails, and tissues.
