IgG2 plays a role in protection against protein antigens but is predominantly responsible for anticarbohydrate IgG responses against bacterial capsular polysaccharides. Unlike IgG1, IgG2 is limited in its ability to engage effector functions. In IgG, IgA and IgD antibody isotypes, the Fc region is composed of two identical protein fragments, derived from the second and third constant domains of the antibody's two heavy chains.
