Fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7) is a secreted protein found mainly in epithelial cells and belongs to the heparin-binding growth factor family. Members of the FGF family have broad mitotic and cell survival activities and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. FGF7 is a highly efficient epithelial cell-specific growth factor, and its mitotic activity is mainly expressed in keratinocytes, but not in fibroblasts and endothelial cells. It may be a major paracrine effect of normal epithelial cell proliferation.
