Official Full Name: opticin
Also known as: OPT
Opticin belongs to class III of the small leucine-leucine-rich repeat protein (SLRP) family. Members of this family are often associated with the extracellular matrix. Opsins are abundant in the vitreous of the eye, but also in the cornea, iris, ciliary body, optic nerve, choroid, retina, and fetal liver. Opticin can non-covalently bind collagen fibrils and regulate the morphology, spacing and organization of fibrils. The opticin gene was mapped to a region of chromosome 1 associated with the inherited eye diseases age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and ataxia of the posterior column of retinitis pigmentosa (AXPC1).
