Neomycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the same class of aminoglycoside antibiotics as streptomycin, kanamycin, and gentamicin. It is produced by Streptomyces flexneri; it is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Neomycin has complete cross-resistance with kanamycin and partial cross-resistance with streptomycin; similar to similar antibiotics, it has nephrotoxicity and inner ear toxicity, and its damage to the inner ear is often irreversible.
