Description

The Recombinant Human Apo-transferrin Protein manufactured by Seafrom is suitable for studying iron transport and cellular processes.
Transferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein found in blood plasma that regulates the levels of free iron in biological fluids. It is believed to have originated from an ancient gene duplication event, resulting in homologous C and N-terminal domains, each of which binds a ferric iron ion. Transferrin's primary function is to transport iron from the intestine, reticuloendothelial system, and liver parenchymal cells to all proliferating cells throughout the body. It is a complex protein composed of alpha helices and beta sheets, forming two domains: one in the N-terminus and another in the C-terminus. These N- and C-terminal domains contain globular lobes, with an iron-binding site situated between them.
The liver is the primary source of transferrin production, although other sources like the brain also produce this glycoprotein. Transferrin plays a role in the innate immune system, found in the mucosa, where it binds iron, creating an environment with low free iron that hinders bacterial survival in a process known as iron withholding. In cases of inflammation, the level of transferrin decreases.
Transferrin transports iron ions from the hemolymph into eggs during the vitellogenic stage. It is an iron-binding transport protein capable of binding two Fe(3+) ions in association with the binding of an anion, usually bicarbonate. Its primary role is to transport iron from sites of absorption and heme degradation to locations of storage and utilization. Additionally, serum transferrin may stimulate cell proliferation. The pH is reduced by hydrogen iron pumps, causing transferrin to release its iron ions. The receptor is then transported through the endocytic cycle, returning to the cell surface for another round of iron uptake. Each transferrin molecule can carry two iron ions in the ferric form.
The lyophilized formulation can be stored at 4°C for 24 months. Once reconstituted, the liquid can be stored at -20°C for 6-12 months, avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
